Where to buy a dyno?

Yep where do you buy one and how much does it cost?

The reason im asking is because there is no Tuners here in Omaha Nebraska(that dnt ask for an arm and leg) and i see that it is a needed service so since im plaing on going to UTI real soon i want to learn how to Tune cars and all that fun stuff so i can bring a Dyno to Omaha.

Now im not saying im going to go by one right now with my capitol one but the more research i can do about it the better...

Any input form you guys..

Did i even put this in the right section?

A dyno will cost you 5-6 digits... are you SURE you want to make that large of an investment this early on?

UTI will not teach you to tune engines.

That depends on what you're looking for. You may be able to find a decent used unit for in the realm of 20k. High end units will cost over 100k.

This doesn't factor in calibration for the dyno, weather equipment for correction, transport to bring the dyno to your shop, etc.

And no, UTI does not teach tuning.

Why do you think tuners charge 120+/hour, while techs make a fraction of that?

To learn tuning, check out classes at . There is also a forum there with dyno discussions.

Greg Banish at also has some classes. He's a calibrator for OEM, currently working on GMs Volt.

I find it very hard to believe that there is no one in Omaha that has a dyno or does tuning because I'm on KCSR.org (Kansas City auto enthusiast group) and many from our group are in contact with people up in Omaha and there is an amazing amount of extremely powerful cars up there. Check out the 1320video.com crew as they're in Omaha and on their links page, a company by the name of C&S Autosports is listed as having a dyno in Omaha.

I have a quick question also, (sorry to hijack!) how does one go about learning how to tune without going to classes? i see that osiris 2.0 is being release soon, but with that, they do not offer free etunes. if i were to spend the extra cash, how would i learn what to do? i'm not gonna do it cause i'm dont want to blow up my car, but i sure some of the guys here have some know how and i'm curious how they learn. did they go through their share of blowing up their own motors as the years went by?

also, in looking for a tuner, what should a person look for? past cars they have tuned, or maybe some kind of certifications or a school that has put out very good tuners?

Thanks!

Take a EFI class, and experiment (very very carefully) on your own car.

I learned on my first s2k, and then further experimented on my STI.

It's a trial and error process, and each engine has different charactoristics.

E.g.

[email protected]/[email protected] are known for their FI VQ tuning abilities

Shawn Church is known for his NA VQ and Honda tuning abilities.

Ok newbies.....Listen to Mike And it is not easy at all to be a tuner, even if you know how to tune, it just gets more complicated because almost every car you tune can react differently.
