Flashing Check Engine

Over the weekend I changed my plugs, the driver side plugs seemed to look a little "wet." This is the secont set of plugs I have chenged and the first time the case was the same. The car is not fouling the plugs or nothing, should I be worried? The other thing is this morning I was driving and the check engine light started to flash. It seemed like I lost a little power and I think I felt that one of the cyliners was not firing? After about a minute of driving it went away. I know that I connected everything together and it was all fine. What does a flashing check engine mean? Usually it will go solid and stay on.

Thx

Flashing CELs mean something major is wrong with the car and it should be be driven unless utterly necessary to prevent future damage. My guess is the valve cover gasket has failed and was leaking oil. The lack of a firing cylinder makes me think that the coil pack isn't seated on the plug or the plug was completely torqued down.

The thing is that I drove the car yesterday for about 300 miles and everything was fine. When I say there is oil on the plugs I mean on the treads not in the rube. The valve cover and the rings are not leaking. I'm not even sure if it was oil since it seemed pretty clear. But it did not smell like gas.

If it flashed and went away, your likely OK - I would go to an AutoZone and do an OBDII scan and see what the code was that it threw.

How many miles on the car? Just wondering why you've changed the plugs and for the second time.

I would bet that it is one of the P30X codes which are a misfire.

The oil on the base of the plug is fine but did you check the gap on each one?

You can also have that issue from bad gas.

One of your cylinders might be misfiring...Get the code checked out...Like the others said...it could be the ignition system. If you smell gas then it could be one cylinder misfiring and thats the unburnt fuel thats coming out...

car has 85k on it and the platinum plugs come pre-gapped to my understanding. The set that I put it at around 50k was still ok but i Just had them laying around. Regular OBDII scanners will not pick up a code unless the light is still on. Snap-on and dealer scan tools will detect previous codes. As for gas I only use premium and nothing else. I installed the OEM NGK plugs. It happened while I was driving up a bridge and then on the way down it went away. I just thought it was strange that it was fine since the weekend and then all of a sudden it happens. I'll drive it tomorrow and see if it happens again. Thx guys

It happened again. I was going about 75 on the Pkwy and the light started to flash again. I was close to the dealer so I figured while the damn thing is flashing they might be able to tell me whats wrong. Well about a mile or so away from the dealer the light went off. I talked to the service rep and he told me they will not be able to get a code unless the light stays on. I was thinking of getting an OBDII tool and see if I can get it to happen again and scan it while I'm driving. would that be a good idea or not really? I might have to take the plugs back apart and make sure something is not loose. I'm open to any suggestions please

thx

I had the misfire problem a couple times a while back but it would always store the code and keep the light on. I have never seen it do it and not stay lit.

**** happened again today on the way to work and the car started to shake. So I know it has to be a misfire. The damn code would not store while driving. I pulled over and just let it sit there and noticed the light stayed on. Went to AZ and got a scan and the code was P0305- cyl 5 misfire. I think I'll just replace the plug and see it that's the problem and go from there.

I'm sitting in the dealer waiting room and I was just told the it is the injector that went. Now with only 85K I was told that this is very rare and I would also presume so. I have to wait 3 days for the part to come in. This really sux, I hope my extended warranty covers this.

It should. If not the injectors are not that hard to swap out.
